Scrip of Cleveland Tin

The way it was … Magnet silver mine near Luina. Says citizen historian Jake: Magnet was a silver, lead and zinc mine closer to Waratah and has been long closed. The mine at Luina was the Cleveland Tin Mine, and only closed in the mid 1980s. Luina was still a thriving mining town in that down-at-heel West Coast way until then.
Environment Tasmania Chief Executive Officer Peter Skillern said “Environment Tasmania supports the Luina mine proposal by Bright Phase Resources.
The company plans to recover tin from the existing tailings and in the process clean up the significant environmental damage that has been left at the old mine site
“These types of proposals that reprocess mine tailings provide employment and clean up legacy mine sites need to be supported.
“Currently the tailings dams are leaking into the Whyte River resulting in a six kilometre section of the river downstream being devoid of life and being stained orange. Having recently visited this site I am appalled that a mine which was only closed in 1986 could in as little as 25 years since its closure be responsible for such environmental contamination.”
“It is unfortunate that it is left to the private sector to clean up these legacy mine sites when such environmental damage should not occur in the first place if agencies such as the EPA were operating effectively” he said
“Environment Tasmania is committed to working with mining companies to ensure that their activities have minimal environmental impacts. Achieving positive environmental outcomes in conjunction with mining proponents is far more preferable than the usual way mining companies undertake business in Tasmania.” he said.
