The Tasmanian Branch of the Australian Education Union welcomed today’s announcement by the Federal Government that it will implement the core recommendations of the Gonski Review.
“The Gillard Government’s commitment to overhaul funding and deliver a formula based on need will have huge benefits for Tasmanian public schools,” said Terry Polglase, AEU Tasmanian Branch President.
“Benchmark funding will be delivered for all students with additional needs-based loadings which will benefit Tasmanian students, particularly those from low-SES communities; Aboriginal students; high and special needs students.”
“All state governments are being asked to play their part in delivering the changes and Tasmania will be no exception.”
“While acknowledging our state’s tough economic times, funding our students according to need is something we cannot afford not to do.”
“It would be unacceptable to deny future generations of Tasmanian children access to high-quality public education and the opportunity to reach their full potential.”
“Playing its part to deliver quality education for all should be a state government imperative with the benefits of investing in quality education significantly outweighing the costs.”
“While we are pleased with the Federal Government’s commitment, we are disappointed that there is a long six-year implementation phase before funding hits top gear.”
“Gonski identified an urgent need for reform and we would like to see an accelerated transition period.”
“Our recent comprehensive survey of members found that only one per cent (statistically insignificant) of respondents did not see implementing Gonski as a priority.”
“The AEU looks forward to working with the state government to bring the Gonski recommendations to fruition for the benefit all.”
