500 die each year from Motor Neurone Disease says Ambassador at national conference, Adelaide South Australia

More than one Australian died every day from motor neurone disease Guy Barnett, Ambassador for Motor Neurone Disease Australia (“MNDA”) said today.

More than 500 Australians die each year and around 1400 people are living with MND in Australia currently. MND progresses at different rates but most people with the disease die within 2 to 3 years, he said.

“For each person diagnosed with the disease an estimated 14 members of their family and friends will live with the impact forever.”

MND care management and achieving best practice are key issues that are to be addressed at the conference, he said. The health professional and service providers are incredibly important to the people involved and as an organisation we are indebted to them for their support. Hopefully our conference will assist them in doing their job even better, he said.

Our organisation raises and then distributes $1 million each year towards vital research. We will not give up in our support to defeat this disease which has no known cause and no known cure, Mr Barnett said.

Guy Barnett will deliver the welcoming address to the MNDA national conference in Adelaide, South Australia tomorrow morning Monday, 10 September.
