The Tasmanian Minerals Council is launching a campaign to give people a voice in the debate over
the future of the State’s industry.
It will include newspaper advertisements and social media, including a Facebook page and website.
The campaign is in response to approaches from many individuals who support Tasmanian industry,
including mining, but believe they are disenfranchised by not having adequate access to the media to
put their point of view, and accordingly feel swamped by adversarial material from the green
movement.
The campaign will be launched on Thursday, 14 June at 11am at The Point Function Room in Burnie.
The Executive Director of the Tasmanian Minerals Council, Terry Long, said the initial focus of the
social media sites would be the survival of mining in Tasmania, but it could go beyond that in
future.
“It’s time for working Tasmanians and their families and unemployed Tasmanians who want to
work to stand up for a fair go, for sustainable job opportunities, and for a secure future,” Mr Long
said.
“Tasmania already has the highest proportion of parks and reserves and the highest unemployment
rate in Australia,” he said.
“The North West has the highest proportion of reserves and the highest unemployment rate in
Tasmania,” Mr Long continued. “It’s time for some balance: 80 per cent of the Tarkine is already
protected, for instance.”
The Facebook site and new website will go live on 16 June in conjunction with advertisements in
Tasmania’s three main newspapers.
The website includes facts, economic surveys and letters of support from people who work in the
mining and mineral processing industries, and people in the supply chain.
The Tasmanian Mining Facebook page and website (www.tasmanianmining.com.au) can be viewed
from 16 June.
