The investment decisions made with recent seasons’ profits are the foundations for future profitability and warrant careful deliberation according to Sandy McEachern, director of agricultural consulting firm, Holmes Sackett.
Recent seasons and market prices for wool and sheep meat have seen Tasmanian producers reap the rewards of years of dedication persistence in the sheep industry. Many are now looking to determine the best spend for any additional returns they may have accumulated.
“Labour productivity will be a key area of investment for the future profitability of sheep enterprises and there are significant gains to be made,” Sandy advises.
“The difference in gross profit generated between different enterprises and the high and increasing cost of labour is clear evidence of this.”
Sandy will be a guest speaker at next week’s AWI Wool Clip event, where he will discuss the frameworks for identifying on-farm investment opportunities and provide some examples of potential returns producers can expect.
Hosted by SheepConnect Tasmania in conjunction with Tasmanian Farmers and Graziers Association, Wool Clip is an AWI-funded initiative that has been tailored to meet the needs of local producers.
The event will cover presentations on:
• Keeping flies, lice and worms under control (AWI)
• Footrot — current situation and management options (DPIPWE/Nilon Farm Health)
• Sustainable pasture systems in any environment (AWI)
• Wool market outlook (AWI)
• Breeding for profitability (AWI)
• Managing sheep and investing for higher labour efficiency (Holmes Sackett)
