At a time when economic forecasts and state budgets clearly show Tasmania isn’t working, the State’s largest private sector, the property industry, is converging to discuss what measures are needed to make Tasmania work.

Tasmanian Executive Director of the Property Council of Australia Mary Massina said Make Tasmania Work Conference registrants would have the opportunity to hear from state and national experts about their views on the industry and the Tasmanian economy, including the good, the bad and the ugly.

“The Make Tasmania Work Conference, which runs from 31 May-1 June, will address a broad range of topics including barriers to investment, the Parliament Square development and the Cat & Fiddle refurbishment, as well as success in tough economic times and much needed micro-economic reform,” Ms Massina said.

“Conference speakers include Peter Verwer (Chief Executive Property Council of Australia), Bernard Sherlock (NAB), Grant O’Brien (CEO Woolworths), Miles Hampton (Chairman of the Tasmanian Water Corporation), and Peter Alexander (Royal Hobart Hospital Redevelopment Project Director).”

Ms Massina said the release of 2012 -13 State Budget had highlighted a missed opportunity to reposition Tasmania and ensure the economic settings were right for the future prosperity of the State.

“The Make Tasmania Work Conference will address some of the tough issues the State is facing and delve into what it is really going to take to make the State function well,” she said.

“As proud Tasmanians and members of the property industry, we know that we can, and must do better.

“We can’t continue to do things the same old way just because that’s the way we have always done them. We need to review the way we govern.

“The Make Tasmania Work Conference is an ideal platform for the industry to reflect and review what we have been doing and develop a plan to make sure Tasmania works.”

The Make Tasmania Conference runs from Thursday, 31 May – Friday, 1 June and will be held in the Tasman Room at the Wrest Point Conference Centre.
