Legislative amendments welcomed
5 January 2012

The Chief Commissioner, Hon. Murray Kellam AO, has today welcomed the enacting of amendments to the legislation governing the Integrity Commission.

The Integrity Commission Amendment Act 2011 was given Royal Assent on 22 December and addresses a range of anomalies and clarifies definitions, particularly relating to Commission-instigated investigations, known as ‘own motion’ investigations.

“This is a step in the right direction and helps ensure that the definition of investigator is clear, whether in relation to complaint-driven investigations or other matters the Commission may investigate,” Mr Kellam said.

The amendments ensure that anonymous complaints can be accepted for assessment and that non-disclosure provisions in relation to notices and other matters will apply to third parties to whom information may need to be passed.

Mr Kellam said broader issues about oversight of Tasmania Police and access to police information systems, raised in the Commission’s first annual report, had been identified as policy matters which need to be considered by the State Government, in conjunction with the Parliamentary Joint Standing Committee on Integrity.
