The Skills Institute will continue to run a limited amount of automotive training from its
Campbell Street training facility in Hobart, following representations made by a
number of small southern Tasmanian automotive workshops.

Under the arrangement, day-release automotive apprentices will continue to have
access to training in the south of the State.

Minister for Education and Skills, the Hon Nick Mckim MP, said a number of
owner/operators of automotive workshops in the southern region had contacted him
asking for day-release training in Hobart to be retained to assist the productivity of
their businesses.

Mr McKim said he recognised it was important to help small businesses in this way
and he was pleased the Institute was able to continue to provide day-release training
at the Hobart facility.

Skills Institute CEO Malcolm White said after receiving feedback from employers in
the South and in consultation with staff and unions, the Institute would go forward
with an arrangement that met the needs of employers and apprentices who preferred
day-release.

“I’m pleased to say this resolution will also help us to achieve the savings needed
through having a smaller operation solely focussed on day-release apprentices and
on-the-job assessment,” Mr White said.
