• Huon Valley Environment Centre hit by vandals for 5th time in six months

Volunteers at the Huon Valley Environment Centre arrived this morning to find large graffitti with a hate message sprawled across it’s premises.

Vandals had painted No Greens on the front window and wall of the environment centre in Huonville.

‘This is the fifth incident of vandalism at the Huon Valley Environment Centre in six months.

“It comes on top of death threats and calls by pro-loggers to burn down our centre.

“We operate a space where community volunteers work for environment protection, children attend the environment centre regularly and hate crimes such as these are not justified by people who may be frustrated by our activities,’ Huon Valley Environment Centre Spokesperson Jenny Weber said.

“I feel upset and angry that we are being continuously targeted through violence because of our non-violent work for Tasmania’s forests.

“Most of the volunteers who work here regularly have young families: we come here to work for the forests, which is our democratic right.

“This is the sort of attacks we constantly have to face and it is unacceptable,” said Jacque Ashworth.

The incident has been reported to the police.
