International Women’s Day

Tomorrow, Thursday 8 March 2012, the 101st anniversary of International Women’s Day will be celebrated across Australia and around the world.

“International Women’s Day is celebrated globally every year on 8 March, recognising the economic and social achievements of women past and present, and looking to the future to see where progress can still be made,” Senator Stephen Parry said today.

“It is an opportunity for women to unite, network and mobilise for meaningful change. However, I believe it is also important for men to get involved and help raise awareness of this important day.
“This year’s United Nations theme is ‘HEmpower Rural Women – End Hunger and PovertyH’, and last week we saw the 56th Commission on the Status of Women discuss this theme.

“Rural women in Australia face challenges that differ from women who live in the city,’ Senator Parry said. ‘And globally, rural women and girls make up one in four people. They make up a large percentage of people working in agriculture, so are critical to helping find solutions to poverty and hunger.

“To commemorate the centenary of International Women’s Day my office will be hosting a morning tea with all funds raised to be donated to UN Women Australia,” Senator Parry said.
