A collaborative dance performance creatively facilitated by Tasdance and featuring
dancers of all ages, shapes and styles from across Tasmania’s North West coast will
launch the performance component of The Dance Project tomorrow night.

A Tasmanian Regional Arts initiative, The Dance Project has been working within three
Tasmanian communities for the past year, with the North West project, Dance Marinara,
the first to be completed.

In creating Dance Marinara, Tasdance artists were inspired by the stories and memories
shared by the people across Tasmania’s North West coast in a series of creative
workshops.

“The people in the community have made this project,” Tasdance Artistic Director Annie
Greig said.

“They have shared their stories of dance experiences and how dance has impacted on
their lives in this beautiful part of Tasmania. Their dedication and creativity in putting
together Dance Marinara has been very exciting, as well as a lot of fun.

“We learned that dance has meant different things to the many dancers in the region over
many years. For some, dance is a social occasion, while for others it’s the joy of
performance and even a therapeutic experience.

“That’s why we called the piece Dance Marinara – we’ve worked to bring different styles of
dance together in a melting pot of dance, with choreography providing the sauce.”

The remaining two dance works forming The Dance Project will be performed in
Scottsdale in Tasmania’s North East on 25 May, and in Hobart on 19 August.

Dance Marinara will be performed at the Devonport Entertainment & Convention Centre
tomorrow night, 31 March at 7pm. Adult tickets are only $12 and are available at the door.
