Hobart City Mission celebrates International Volunteer Day
International Volunteer Day: Monday 5 December
Hobart City Mission will today recognise the many volunteers that give their time and
services to the organisation, as part of International Volunteer Day, a global day which
recognises the selfless work of volunteers.
Hobart City Mission was recently named as a finalist in the Volunteer Management category
of this year’s Community Achievement Awards.
Volunteer Coordinator of Hobart City Mission, Sheralyn Jackson, said volunteers are an
integral part of the organisation.
”There are 130 individuals who volunteer for Hobart City Mission, of which 95 per cent
volunteer in the retail sector, in our seven op shops around Hobart and our furniture
warehouse and sorting room,” Ms Jackson said.
“We have several programs to assist those in the community who are finding it difficult, such
as family assistance and counselling, emergency relief, transitional support services,
financial guidance and budgeting which are available for families and individuals in need.”
CEO of Volunteering Tasmania, Adrienne Picone, said International Volunteer Day aims to
highlight the role of volunteers in the community and recognises their tireless work.
“There are over 5000 not-for-profit organisations operating in Tasmania with 131,000
volunteers who donate their time and energy to a good cause and today is their day,” Ms
Picone said.
“It is really important to have a day that is dedicated to volunteers and to celebrate the time
and effort they give to the community, which can sometimes go unrecognised.
“The contribution of volunteers is universally recognised and appreciated in many different
areas including sport, healthcare and emergency services across Tasmania.
“International Volunteer Day is the perfect time to reflect on the contribution volunteers make
as well as call for more people to think about volunteering.”
International Volunteer Day was established by the United Nations General Assembly in
1985 and is now celebrated by thousands of volunteers worldwide.
