Greens back public education day of action

The Australian Greens are committed to ensuring public education is the priority of any new Commonwealth funding system.

“Today’s National Day of Action for Public Education highlights the strong levels of support for greater federal funding for public schools,” Australian Greens Leader Bob Brown said today in Hobart.

“With the Gonski Review of Funding for Schooling due to hand its report to the Government at the end of the year, the Greens want to see legislation for the new Commonwealth funding system for government and non-government schools introduced by the end of 2012,” Senator Brown said.

The day of action aims to send a clear message to David Gonski about making public education a priority, before he hands over his findings in December.

“The Government has already extended the current inequitable funding model for another year, until 2013, which means that any reform to the current system cannot be implemented until at least 2014.”

“We want a public school system that sets the standard for education in the nation,” Senator Brown said.
