Environment Groups Support Legislative Council on Container Deposit Scheme
Tasmania’s peak environment body Environment Tasmania has backed the Legislative Council’s push for a Container Deposit Scheme to be established in Tasmania.
“A container deposit scheme is now in place in South Australia and the Northern Territory, and the Legislative Council is right to call for the system to be set-up in Tasmania,” said Peter Skillern, Executive Officer for Environment Tasmania,
“Given this will generate revenue for local councils and recycling businesses whilst reducing waste and improving the environment, there is no excuse for the Tasmanian Government to continue to find reasons to delay the implementation of this important scheme. This type of waste management is fundamental to Tasmania’s claim of being ‘clean and green’ ” he said.
“While there are a number of other more contentious environmental issues being debated currently, this is not one of them. This issue is a ‘no brainer’, it is relatively easy to implement, has broad support across Tasmania and provides a multitude of benefits for both the community and the environment” he concluded.
