Max Burslem calls it a day after over 42 years at Tasmania’s iconic brewery

For Cascade’s Max Burslem, his career spanning four decades has not been just a job – it’s been a lifelong passion and, despite a revolution in beer both in terms of style and drinking patterns, Cascade Draught is still his favourite.

“A lot has changed, things have come and gone, but my affection for this brewery and the beer it produces remains unchanged,” Max said.

“Cascade beers are among some of the best in the world, using the best Tasmanian hops, barley and water and even after all this time I’m still a Cascade Draught man.”

Max said it was difficult to pinpoint achievements he was most proud of, as there were so many to choose from since starting as an assistant brewer back in 1969.

“They’re all good memories. So many it’s hard to think!” Max said.

“The Safety and Environmental awards that we’ve won are very special to me.”

“Other high points included the launch of Cascade Premium, which was definitely a highlight, as was the launch of the First Harvest Ale.”

Max, who celebrated his 40th anniversary at Cascade in 2009, said he was looking forward to having some free time to enjoy some fishing among other things.

“I have a weekend shack at Bruny Island and enjoy fishing and sharing some tall tales over a beer or two with friends,” he said.

Max’s retirement party will be held at Cascade Brewery on Wednesday 26 October to celebrate his over 42 years of hard work and dedication before he finishes up at the end of November.
