Get Arthur-Pieman tracks closure on track 4

The Tasmanian Greens today called for the Environment Minister to ensure that the recommendations made in the Parks and Wildlife Service’s Arthur Pieman Tracks Report are in place before summer.

Greens Member for Braddon Paul O’Halloran MP said there was growing frustration over the ongoing delays in the identified track closures necessary to protect the region’s natural and cultural values.

“Action to improve the off-road vehicle management in the Arthur Pieman Conservation Area as been a long dragged-out process ever since the Management Group commenced in late 2008,” Mr O’Halloran said.

“We are now looking at another summer, which is the high traffic period, with the natural and Aboriginal cultural values of the area still under threat due to a lack of action to close the identified off-road vehicle tracks.”

“Environment Minister Brian Wightman makes all the right noises over protecting the identified values of the area, but we need a clear timetable outlining a transparent process for the identification of tracks to be closed, and their actual closure.”

“Failure to get tracks closures moving will mean the continued and unacceptable erosion of biodiversity and cultural heritage from the area,” Mr O’Halloran said.”
