Southern Water is building a new, larger reservoir to future-proof one of Hobart’s fastest growing residential areas.

The Lenah Valley Augmentation Project includes the construction of a new 4.5 megalitre reservoir just above Pottery Road, some refurbishment of the Newlands Pump Station in Mt Stuart, construction of water supply pipelines within Lenah Valley and changes to pipe work and controls within the reticulation system. The total estimated cost of the project is $4.2 million.

Southern Water’s CEO, Mr Mike Paine, said the 4.5 megalitre reservoir and associated pipework will provide the capacity for further economic growth and development in the Hobart suburb of Lenah Valley.

“Southern Water infrastructure will provide a reliable source of clean water for this fast growing suburb. This new 4.5 megalitre reservoir will supply water to around 1000 current homes in the Lenah Valley area.

“Replacing this aging infrastructure will improve water pressure for many residents in Lenah Valley.

“The increased capacity will provide for greater development opportunities in the area, nearly doubling the potential number of water connections. Once completed, this Lenah Valley Augmentation Project will allow for the potential expansion of the serviced land in the suburb of Lenah Valley.

“The Lenah Valley Augmentation Project is just one example of the projects Southern Water is investing in for the future, to improve the economic, environmental and health outcomes for the Tasmanian community.”

The need for a new reservoir was recognised by Hobart City Council prior to the water and sewerage reforms and Hobart City Council remain a key stakeholder in this project, as an increase in Southern Water’s serviced land area will potentially increase the number of properties in the area.
