How epilepsy smart are you?
Reachelle Beasley CEO says “This weekend we are asking all Tasmania’s to ‘get epilepsy smart’ and take the online quiz. It only takes a minute, but that minute could potentially provide you with education you need to help someone who is having a seizure”
Raising awareness of epilepsy is important, but it‟s even more important to know what to do, and to feel confident in helping, when someone has a seizure. It‟s also important to dispel many of the myths that have been perpetuated purely through ignorance.
One great way of checking your knowledge, and to „get epilepsy smart‟, is to take the quiz. It‟s a quick, informative and simple way of testing your knowledge about epilepsy and seizure first aid. Simply go to www.epilepsysmart.org.au
Once participants have done the Epilepsy Smart Quiz they will receive a certificate that recognises how they have helped. The Epilepsy Smart Quiz has been developed by the Epilepsy Foundation and is supported by Epilepsy Australia and its members, of which Epilepsy Tasmania is one.
Epilepsy Tasmania is working within a holistic framework to enhance the quality of life for people living with epilepsy, and to improve community awareness, understanding and acceptance to reduce stigma and create a more welcoming and inclusive society.
Just how much do you know about epilepsy? If someone had a seizure in your workplace or on the street, would you know what to do?
Epilepsy Tasmania is calling on all Tasmania‟s to test their knowledge about epilepsy this weekend.
This challenge coincides with the Tasmanian Final of the Epilepsy Australia Trivia Challenge where more than 2500 students have participated. On Sunday 240 finalists will put their epilepsy and general knowledge to the test, all in aid of increasing awareness of epilepsy and seizure first aid.

Children challenged about epilepsy and general knowledge
On Sunday 17th July 2011, 240 primary school students from around Tasmania, will participate in the state final of the Epilepsy Australia Trivia Challenge.
Trivia Challenge helps to raise awareness of epilepsy in schools through a general knowledge quiz aligned with questions relating to epilepsy. Students are provided with information, and are asked to research epilepsy and seizure first aid to enable them to answer the questions.
Reachelle Beasley CEO said “Raising awareness of epilepsy is important, but even more important is enabling our children to feel confident to help someone who is having a seizure”.
More than 2500 students from around Tasmania competed in the in-school challenge earlier in the year and the top four (4) students from years 3, 4, 5 and 6 were chosen to compete in the state final.
The winning year 6 team will have an opportunity to compete in the National final later this year. Last year Hobart based Corpus Christi Catholic School, placed third in year 6 National Final.
The State final will be held at Action packed Stadium (formerly the Elphin Sports Centre) on Sunday 17th July, with the event starting at 10.45am and the winners being announced at 2.15pm.
