Speculation Over Aurora Industrial Dispute Causing Avoidable Mistakes
The Tasmanian Greens today called on the Minister for Energy, Bryan Green, to shed light on the real issues surrounding a power outage in East Devonport recently that affected over 70 homes, highlighting speculation there were avoidable maintenance mistakes due to industrial action between Aurora workers and management.
Greens Member for Braddon, Paul ‘Basil’ O’Halloran MP, said if there are underlying tensions between Aurora workers and Aurora management that is causing avoidable mistakes, then action needs to be taken to ensure that Tasmanians are not impacted on due to this dispute.
“Over 70 homes in Devonport recently where left without power with speculation it was due to a communication problem resulting in reverse polarisation of a transformer, which could have been alleviated by some overtime of the original crew,” Mr O’Halloran said.
“If Aurora crews are making avoidable mistakes due to ongoing industrial disputes with Aurora management, then Minister Greens needs to step up, and step in so that Tasmanians do not suffer as a result.”
“All the Greens and affected residents want is answers. Minister Green stated that he will seek advice and provide the information at a later date. This is not about taking a swipe at Aurora work crews who work often in the most extreme of conditions.”
“When homes are without prolonged power or when polarity is reversed, appliances are destroyed. The Greens will not stand idly by, and we will wait eagerly for the response from the Minister to ensure that Tasmanians are protected from the dangers of mistakes with electricity,” Mr O’Halloran said.
