Huon Pine Furniture For Sale

Posted on

Beautiful classic Huon Pine furniture for sale:

About 25 years ago I met a fine wood craftsman in Tasmania. His name is Dennis Tuffin. Dennis had a sign out on the main road saying “pine furniture to order”. Very understated – but very accurate – just like Dennis.

He showed me around his workshop and then a photo album of examples of his craft. We became good friends, and worked on the design of this furniture for some months.

Having spent a few years as a young boy on the West Coast, staying at Princess River and playing in the ruins of Crotty, I had been bought up to understand the beauty of Huon Pine, Celery Top Pine, King Billy, and many other types of wood now frequently called ‘exotics’ but once were in abundance.

So – Dennis made me a coffee table, a dining/ family table, 2 carvers, 2 long benches in the same style as the carvers capable of seating 3 people comfortably, (making the dining table set an 8 seater if needed) and a whimsical bed made from Huon timber all from the same tree (the sides are mounted onto Celery top for its strength).

Whilst all are superb – the dining table/set is most impressive and is (table) a single slab of wood, running from one side of the tree to the other, and shows all of the outside flaws and burn marks (properly sealed) before running across the beautiful expanse of patterns – with some birds-eye adding great character and form. The legs are limbs taken from a river, and have a slight olive colour and are without any real wood-working artifacts. We just cleaned them up and put them onto the Huon frame that supports the table top.

The furniture has been in storage for 2 years, and the photographs show some dust on the surface. All surfaces have a beautiful lustre. Im offering it for sale – reluctantly – as I am living and working in the Great Western Desert in the Kimberley, WA. and I wont be back for some years.

This may suit a home wanting beautiful and increasingly rare furniture. However it may also suit a woodworking specialist who can take what is here and re-purpose it for some other tribute to what is one of the worlds most superb timbers. Warm, sensuous and remarkable.

All up, Im asking somewhere around $4000 for the whole lot, negotiable – with collection and transport to be the responsibility of the buyer.

Ideally I´d like to sell as one lot, otherwise the items are separated into the following lot:

coffee table, dining setting, bed, and are individually priced and offered at the same prices sold to me 25 years ago:

Coffee table: $500
Dining table benches and carvers: $3500
Bed (queen size): $1500

The goods are in a furniture removalist storage in suburban Melbourne, meaning its a few phone calls to sort out.

Please contact me by email for any discussion on price, location and other information. unfortunately – the phone services are often difficult as we head into the wet season – so email is best: richard.c.d.butler@gmail.com
