Alderman Philip Cocker described the attack by Liberal Opposition Treasure Peter Gutwein on Nick McKim as displaying frightening economic illiteracy and social ignorance.
‘Attacking Greens Leader Nick McKim because he is commencing real work on how to manage the issues of Peak Oil is putting Mr Gutwein’s lack of knowledge clearly out for display,’ Alderman Cocker said.
‘For a State importing approximately one billion dollars of petroleum products a year there is a real urgency to take the advice of the International Energy Agency and start taking action on peak oil and how we as a State will manage the impacts.’
‘If we could reduce our dependence on imported petroleum products by just 10% this could realize huge financial and economic gains for the State,’ Alderman Cocker said.
‘It is all very well to have an opposition spokesperson for cost of living, but you need to back it up with evidence-based policies and talk about real issues. Peak Oil is one of the most significant cost of living issues Tasmanians will face over the next decade and needs urgent action.’
Alderman Cocker said, ‘I urge Mr Gutwein to get up to speed on the economic and social issues relating to Peak Oil and the coming Oil Crunch and talk about solutions, and stop attacking those who are heeding the most credible advice that we need to act.’
