Greens Call for Labor and Liberal Support

The Tasmanian Greens today praised the continued progress being made in the Renewing Queenstown project and the community’s great work bringing the ‘Renew Newcastle’ concept to the West Coast to develop local jobs, and have called for Labor and Liberal parties to support this scheme.

Greens member for Braddon Paul ‘Basil’ O’Halloran MP highlighted the contribution of the Australian and Tasmanian Greens, particularly Senator Christine Milne, in bringing the driver of Project Newcastle, Marcus Westbury, to Queenstown and his involvement in two forums, one attended by 75 residents, and the second involving 25 community leaders.

“This pioneering community project shows that protecting the built and natural environment can also create vibrant communities,” said Mr O’Halloran.

“Mr Westbury was delighted to see the progress made by the Project Queenstown community team, headed up by Travis Tiddy, and the new group Renew Queenstown established under the leadership of local businessman, Phil Evans.”

“The Queenstown public forum and round table discussion made it clear that the community believes renewal can work in their town, and the Greens are keen to see the ‘Renew Newcastle’ model embraced and bring the successes Newcastle experienced to the West Coast.”

“The Greens would like to see the potential of the Renew Newcastle model realised in Queenstown and rolled out to other Tasmanian regional towns and communities.”

“Worthwhile projects, such as this ‘Renew’ model, deserve tripartite party support for their innovative approach. That’s why I and the Greens back regional communities such as Queenstown, which is harnessing community spirit to bring about renewal of their town and local economy,” said Mr O’Halloran.
