Weeds in Focus

What: Tasmanian Weed Society Seminar (Weeds; Policy in Practice) and Annual General Meeting.

When: Friday 18th March 2009, 10:30 – 2:30

Where: The Grange, Campbell Town

Speakers: Michael Askey-Doran (DPIPWE), David Lane (DPIPWE) and Special Guest

Everyone has a problem with weeds. A weed is a plant which hurts the economy, people or the environment. Some weeds can take over a backyard, others can spoil a whole crop. Some weeds can ruin acres of pasture, others, posing as pretty garden plants, can insidiously invade our unique bushland.

The Tasmanian Weed Society will be holding a seminar on weed policy on Friday 18th March at the Grange in Campbell Town. Themes of the seminar will be the process for declaration of weeds under the Tasmanian Weed Management Act 1999 and how action on weed management can be effectively implemented. We will also be holding our AGM just before lunch on the day.

The Tasmanian Weed Society provides a forum for those working against weeds, or interested in weedy issues to network, share information and keep up to date.

President of the society, Alan Barton, said “following on from our very successful 2nd Tasmanian Weed Conference, the Tasmanian Weed Society is looking forward to another active year. We would like to broaden the discussion surrounding weeds and bring awareness of weeds to a wider audience”.

“At this seminar DPIPWE’s Principal Weed Management Officer Mike Askey Doran, will discuss the current focus of the Weed Management Staff of DPIPWE including initiatives to improve access to up to date information on weeds and the Department’s approach to current weeds of concern, and David Lane the Regional Weed Management Officer for DPIPWE in the north will provide detail of the known distribution of Serrated tussock in the Northern Region.

We welcome everyone who is interested, but would like them to rsvp to acoombe@gcc.tas.gov.au or phone 62166315 by Tuesday 15th March.
