Dr Pete Hay will launch a new short film highlighting the extraordinary uniqueness and diversity of Tasmania’s marine environment at a side event of the Wooden Boat Festival tomorrow. The film shows spectacular footage of some of the unique species that inhabit our marine environment, and explains the importance of this environment to the lifestyles and livelihoods of all Tasmanians.
What: Short film launch
Who: Dr Pete Hay – writer, reader and former academic with UTAS in geography and environment studies
Rebecca Hubbard – Marine Coordinator, Environment Tasmania
When: 1-1.30pm Friday 11 February
Where: Art Installation Suite, Henry Jones Art Hotel, Hunter St
“Tasmania has some of the world’s most unique and diverse marine environments, with around 90% of our marine life found nowhere else. Yet even though Tasmanians identify strongly as islanders, many have never experienced this magnificent environment. This film takes people underwater and makes that possible,” said Rebecca Hubbard, Marine Coordinator with Environment Tasmania.
“Over a thousand copies of the film will be distributed through schools, community groups councils, and events around the state, to increase awareness and support for a healthy marine environment. The film is also available online at oceanplanet.org.au,” concluded Ms Hubbard.
The film was made possible through funding from an NRM South Naturally Inspired grant, which is supported by the Commonwealth Government Caring for our Country program.
NOTE: The film is 3 minutes long. Mini DV tapes will be provided to TV stations for using exclusively to cover the launch event.
