Greens flag moves to ban battery hen farms 4

Battery Hens live in Hell

The Tasmanian Greens today (Wed) ramped up their campaign for a ban on battery hen farming in Tasmania, noting the practice’s serious animal welfare concerns alongside the further issue of consumer health.

Greens Animal Welfare spokesperson Cassy O’Connor MP said that World Egg Day, held on 8 October 2010, yet again highlighted the serious welfare concerns that accompany the battery hen farming industry, and flagged that she will be introducing legislation to ban battery hen farms in the near future.

“World Egg Day focused on the benefits of eating eggs, but it also had a very serious message which it is past time for the Tasmanian Parliament to heed,” Ms O’Connor said.

“Once again the need to legislate a ban on the unpopular and inhumane practice of battery hen farming in the state has been highlighted, due to its associated health issues and the damage to Tasmania’s clean, green brand.”

“There are growing community calls for Tasmania to be free of the taint of battery egg production, and I intend to introduce the Greens’ proposed legislation to ban the practice of battery hen farming.”

“The serious issues of animal welfare associated with battery hen farming makes this matter a wider social issue, and as such I urge both the Labor and Liberal parties to allow their members a conscience when the Greens’ proposed legislation is debated.”
