‘All people are equal and should be treated as such’
Independent Member for Denison Andrew Wilkie today joined in a press conference held by Australian Marriage Equality.
The conference unveiled a Galaxy Poll commissioned by Australian Marriage Equality which showed almost two thirds (62%) of Australians are in favour of marriage equality and that 78% support a Parliamentary conscience vote on marriage equality.
Mr Wilkie said he was strongly in favour of marriage equality laws and supported the push by Australian Marriage Equality for a conscience vote in Parliament.
“All people are equal and should be treated as such,” Mr Wilkie said.
“Yet, in Australia we still have legislated discrimination in the Marriage Act and that is unacceptable.”
“The PM should respect the fact that the majority of Australians favour marriage equality and an overwhelming number want to see a conscience vote on the matter in Parliament.”
“It’s beyond time for the Parliament to start representing the people.”
