Greens Flag Move to Amend Constitution Act
The Tasmanian Greens today said that they would pursue their amendment to the Constitution Act 1934 which would require that elected representatives serve in only one tier of government at any one time, following the Local Government Minister, Bryan Green, acknowledging during Budget Estimate Committee hearings that he doesn’t think that two jobs can be done properly simultaneously.
Greens Member for Bass, Kim Booth MP, said that currently one person can not take a seat in the Federal Parliament as well as hold a seat in the State Parliament, and that similar restrictions should also apply to Local Government elected representatives.
“Local Government Minister Bryan Green today agreed that he personally did not think that one person can do justice to their elected responsibilities should they attempt to be both a Local Councillor as well as a Member of Parliament,” Mr Booth said.
“This has long been the position of the Greens and I will pursue this in the Parliament to seek the necessary amendment to the Constitution Act 1934.”
“The electorate deserve the dedicated attention of their representatives, whether at the Federal, State or Local government level.”
