Federal Labor’s support for Hobart rail welcome 4

The Hobart Northern Suburbs Rail Action Group today thanked outgoing Federal Member for Denison Duncan Kerr SC MP for his tremendous personal support for their proposal to establish a modern passenger rail service to Hobart’s Northern Suburbs.

President Ben Johnston presented Mr Kerr with Honorary Foundation Membership of the Hobart Northern Suburbs Rail Action Group, saying his support had been instrumental in building the campaign for rail in Hobart.

“Last year Duncan was the first politician to publicly back our proposal and he has been a constant source of encouragement and support for our campaign,” Mr Johnston said.

“As a proud Claremont boy, it was fitting that we were able to acknowledge Duncan’s support today on the proposed site of the Claremont station on the Hobart-Northern Suburbs Railway.”

“The Tasmanian Government has now allocated $350,000 to a feasibility study on our proposal that is an important step towards realising our vision of a modern, energy efficient passenger rail link between Hobart and its Northern Suburbs.”

Mr Johnston also took the opportunity this morning to formally present his proposal to Labor’s candidate for the Federal Seat of Denison, Jonathon Jackson.

“We are fortunate that Jonathon is also a strong supporter of our proposal and has promised to continue to help our campaign if elected,” Mr Johnston said.

“Should the feasibility study find that passenger rail is viable in Hobart, Jonathon’s support will be critical in helping to lobby for Federal Government funding towards the project.”
