NW couple’s fox sighting

Posted on

A DEVONPORT woman is convinced foxes are alive and well in Tasmania.

Cheryl Burgess and her husband Dave have had their previous beliefs debunked after sighting a fox for themselves.

“I am more than 100%, I am 150% certain foxes exist here in Tasmania now,” she said.

“This has changed our minds. Before I wouldn’t have believed there was any here, but now …”

The fox, described as smaller than a medium sized dog, left a paddock on one side of the road, crossed in front of their vehicle and into another paddock.

“We had pulled over and slowed right down, we were doing about 5kmh when Dave spotted it,” Mrs Burgess said.

“He said look there’s a fox and sure enough it was.”

Adding to Mrs Burgess’ belief was on the same night she also heard a strange sound she didn’t recognise.

“I was standing outside the car when I heard it and I thought: what was that? It sounded a bit like a bird.

“I now know after visiting a website and listening to a fox call that that’s what it was.”

Fox Eradication Program Tasmania manager Alan Johnston said more than 2000 reported sightings had been made since 2005.

“We treat all reports seriously and undertake some form of investigation into each,” he said.

The sighting occurred in the early hours of the morning on March 10 about 1km from Lilydale.

The couple were trying to locate their eldest daughters’ car, which had been stolen earlier that night.
