Union anger over mill workers’ aid
Unions have criticised the support provided by Government agencies to redundant mill workers in Tasmania.
Burnie’s 70-year history of paper making will come to an end in July when Paperlinx closes the town’s mill.
The mill’s 200 workers will join 250 paper mill workers who lost their jobs at Wesley Vale two months.
Donna Sargent from the Manufacturing Workers union says the 250 workers made redundant in February have not had adequate support from government agencies.
“People have been told to go to Google and type in ‘resume’ and it’ll tell you everything you need to know,” she said.
The Federal member for Braddon Sid Sidebottom says he is surprised by the workers’ complaints.
“If these experiences were negative, I’d like to know about it. I certainly know the agencies would like to know about it,” he said.
Funding delay
Liberal Senator Richard Colbeck says government funding to stimulate the economy has not created any new jobs yet.
