Dumped unionist says Rudd welshed on deal

Failed Labor Senate candidate and Tasmanian union boss Kevin Harkins has accused the Prime Minister of breaking an ALP agreement not to oppose him if he sought pre-selection.

Mr Harkins has spoken for the first time since Labor’s national executive rejected a recommendation from the state branch to give him a winnable spot on Tasmania’s Senate ticket.

The outspoken Electrical Trades Union boss believes comments made by Kevin Rudd in Parliament led to the rejection of his bid for pre-selection in favour of the ousted state Labor MP Lisa Singh.

Mr Rudd last year said Mr Harkins was a pugilist who had “Buckley’s” chance of pre-selection.

Mr Harkins has told the 7.30 Report that senior ALP figures agreed in 2007 not to oppose his candidacy in the future.
