RESTORE OUR PARLIAMENT
House of Assembly to 35 Members
“Such a reform process must be considered, inclusive, logical and enduring
and its need is urgent” Doug Lowe Past Premier, TCS Paper.UTAS 2 March 2010.

The Tasmanian Constitution Society was formed this year for the principal purpose of restoring Tasmania’s House of Assembly. The objects of the Society are to:

INVIGORATE Hold forums to invigorate the study of good governance.
PUBLISH Support the learning of members by publishing papers.
EXAMINE Pursue capable governance and the maintenance of effective ministries by examining the Tasmanian Constitution.
REFORM Identify and recommend such reforms as the Association may from
time to time determine.
RESTORE Seek an Act of Parliament to restore the House of Assembly from 25 to 35

The Tasmanian Parliament was reduced in 1998 without referendum or any constitutional consultation with the Tasmanian people from 35 to 25 despite the previous formal recommendation of the Ogilvie and Morling committee reports that such a reduction would be deleterious to the quality of government.

Amongst the adverse effects of this on the Parliament elected in 2006 was the reduction of the opposition to only 7 members, the promotion of recently-elected backbenchers to ministerial positions and the necessity to appoint members of the Legislative Council (intended to be a house of review) to fill ministerial vacancies.

The next meeting is on 27 April. at 6:30pm at the Stanley Burbury Theatre, University Centre Sandy Bay. Bring two friends. You should then take part in a move toward a Petition of our new Parliament.
