The Rosebery action; Call for probe
A national law firm has launched a group action over claims of heavy metal poisoning in a mining town on Tasmania’s west coast.
Slater and Gordon will represent about 28 current and former residents of Rosebery who say they have been contaminated by heavy metals from the local mine.
The mine’s owner MMG, the Tasmanian Government and the West Coast Council will be taken to court.
Lawyer Peter Long said preliminary investigations show the case has merit.
“We’re very satisfied it does so we’re now proceeding towards gathering the more substantial evidence and commencing proceedings,” he said.
The law firm will seek compensation for medical and care costs.
Lawyers will also argue the Health Department and the local council failed in their duty of care to residents.
Proceedings are expected to be filed in the Tasmanian Supreme Court within four months.
