Short-term memory loss

THE Tasmanian Forest Contractors Association wants the government to help contractors leave the industry.

The call comes after a five-week shutdown of Gunns Ltd’s Tamar woodchip plant.

Association chairman Rodney Bishop said the shutdown, on top of many closures last year, would lead to the demise of businesses and the loss of work.

Mr Bishop said many of the affected businesses had lost a significant amount of equity in the past 12 to 18 months because of market problems.

Gunns is expected to hold meetings with the contractors who supply the Triabunna and Hampshire mills early this month.
