Tasmania boosts PS. Irish slash ’em!
Ding! Here’s an idea. Ireland’s budget this week …
From today’s IRISH TIMES
From January 1st public servants will suffer a cut of 5 per cent on the first €30,000 (AU$48,000) of salary, 7.5 per cent on the next €40,000 (AU$64,000) and 10 per cent on the next €55,000 (AU$88,400).
Social welfare recipients face an average reduction of 4.1 per cent with those under 25 facing much more substantial cuts.
Public sector workers bear brunt of €4bn spending cuts
The Dáil will debate cuts in social welfare rates today when it discusses legislation to enable measures outlined in yesterday’s Budget.
Public servants and social welfare recipients took the brunt of the €4 billion in spending cuts announced in the Budget yesterday by Minister for Finance Brian Lenihan.
Reaction has been largely negative with the Opposition claiming the Budget was not ‘fair’ and public service unions threatening further unrest.
However, speaking this morning in defence of the Budget, Minister for Social and Family Affairs Mary Hanafin said the cuts in social welfare would not have a severe impact – as the increases in last year’s budget still existed.
