River Red Gum Campaign
In what was his last major act as Premier, Nathan Rees yesterday announced the creation of a new National Park across the Millewa Group of River Red Gum Forests, which, coupled with the Victorian Parks, means that the worlds largest River Red Gum Forest is now protected.
The announcement precludes the final report and recommendations for their future, due to be released by the NSW Natural Resources Commission on December 21. The Wilderness Society is calling on the NSW government to follow this announcement with the creation of new National Parks across the entirety of the River Red Gum State Forest estate.
With the report so close, now is a crucial time to let the new Premier, Kristina Keneally, know that she must act to protect the entirety of these Australian icons.
Please take the time to send her a message telling her that she must act.
The forests of the region suffer from extreme water stress, with up to 75% of the trees stressed dead, or dying. They have been further degraded by the combined pressures of industrial grazing and industrial logging – mainly for low value products such as firewood. It is time to give these forest wetlands the protection they deserve
