Candidate for the Break O’Day Council elections Peter Power has announced he has joined the
Australian Democrats and will be seeking their endorsement to stand for Lyons in the upcoming
state election.
“I was thrilled to hear the Australian Democrats were coming back in Tasmania”, Mr Power
said. “We need accountability and balance in Tasmania, as well as sensible solutions that take in
to account both sides of the issue, and that’s what the Australian Democrats are all about”.
Mr Power had identified key issues in Lyons that he will campaign on, including water, tourism,
aged care, land use, environment, health and social issues and indigenous issues. “One of the
great things about the Australian Democrats is that each candidate can have their own
positions. My right to vote with my conscience and in the interests of my constituents is in the
constitution of the party, which gives me all the freedoms of an Independent with the backing
of a party whose ideals I believe in.”
Tasmanian Campaign Director James Irvine says that the Australian Democrats are very happy
to have candidates of Peter’s calibre join the party “We have had a number of highly qualified
people join since our recent announcement that we had re‐established the division, including
Peter and a sitting member of another council,” Mr Irvine said.
While vetting has started for Mr Power and other candidates who have nominated, the party
would not be formally pre‐selecting anyone until successfully re‐registered as a party with the
Tasmanian Electoral Commission.
Mr Irvine said “the party will have a contested pre‐selection in Braddon where three people
have already indicted they wish to nominate, and we expect to be able to field candidates in
most seats, as long as they can get re‐registered in time. We need our supporters to make the
jump to members for this to happen.”
