SUPPORT FOR SMITHTON COMMUNITY OVER McCAIN CLOSURE
Immediate and Long-term Solutions Needed
The Tasmanian Greens today threw their support behind the workers, growers and their families flowing from the shock announcement by McCains that the company intends to close its Smithton vegetable processing plant early next year, describing it as a serious blow for the community.
Greens Braddon candidate, Paul O’Halloran, who currently works in the Primary Industries sector specialising in encouraging young people into the industry, said that the challenge now was for community and government leaders to work towards identifying immediate and long term solutions for the region.
Mr O’Halloran also welcomed the establishment of a community taskforce, and said that he would be visiting Smithton late next week and hopes to discuss future options with local representatives.
“McCains announcement is a shocking blow for our vegetable growers, Smithton’s workers and their families, and on behalf of the Tasmanian Greens I offer our support and encouragement,” Mr O’Halloran said.
“This vegetable processing plant at Smithton was the backbone for the community, and now the challenge facing us all is to identify immediate options for those affected 155 workers, as well as long term solutions that help diversify and strengthen the region’s industries and local economies.”
“The Greens welcome the prompt establishment of the taskforce, and we would also appreciate the opportunity to contribute to that taskforce to work co-operatively in the interests of the community, as with a sudden blow like this surely all ideas and expertise are needed.”
“When in Smithton next week, I hope to discuss with as many people and representatives as possible current concerns and future options, and reassure them that the Greens are willing to work hard and co-operatively to secure a strong and vibrant future for the community and the north-west region,” Mr O’Halloran said.
