Appointment of Tasmania Together Board Members

Parliamentary Secretary to the Premier Heather Butler today announced the appointment of eight members to the Tasmania Together Progress Board, following a public nomination process.

A new member from the North West Coast, Ms Megan Cavanagh-Russell has been appointed to the Board for a period of three years.

“Ms Cavanagh-Russell has made extensive contributions to the education and arts communities in Tasmania,” Ms Butler said.

“With her wealth of experience and commitment to issues that are important to Tasmanians, Ms Cavanagh-Russell brings a fresh and dynamic perspective to the Board.”

Ms Cavanagh-Russell’s experience in education ranges from classroom teaching to Dean and Head of School with the University of Tasmania’s Faculty of Education. She was also integral to the establishment and development of the University’s Cradle Coast campus. Ms Cavanagh-Russell is a trained pianist and has a keen interest in, and close affiliation with, the Tasmanian arts community.

In June this year, the Government sought nominations for membership on the Tasmania Together Progress Board.

Ms Butler encouraged nominations from new people with new ideas, while also encouraging re-nominations from existing Board members who had proven their commitment and value to progressing the Tasmania Together goals and benchmarks.

Ms Butler also announced today the re-appointment of six current members for a period of up to three years. Mr Bob Campbell will remain Chair of the Board.

“Next year is an important year for the Board, with the 10 Year Review of Tasmania Together to take place.”

Ms Butler said a new member would add a new element to the board, while it would also benefit from consistency and continuity in its membership.

“As 2010 approaches we are nearly half-way towards our 2020 vision for Tasmania. Tasmanians have come a long way and the 10 Year Review will be critical to the continued success of Tasmania Together over the next 10 years”.

“The experience of the reappointed members will be of great benefit to the Tasmania Together Progress Board as it undertakes the 10 Year Review.”

The appointed Board members include:

* Ron Ward – Manager, Veolia Environmental Services; Director, Tasmanian Chamber of Commerce and Industry
* Michael Lynch (Deputy Chair) – Chair, Tasmanian Heritage Council
* Louise Sullivan – Coordinator, Goodwood Community House
* Roberta Julian – Associate Professor, University of Tasmania
* Kirsty Dunphey – Director, Elephant Property
* Bob Campbell (Chair) – Co-director, Groupwork Pty Ltd
* Kem Perkins – Farmer and stud stock breeder
* Megan Cavanagh-Russell – Educator and entrepreneur.

Members of the Tasmania Together Progress Board are responsible for monitoring and progressing the benchmarks and goals contained in the Tasmania Together document, as well as promoting the 20-year plan in the community and working collaboratively with the community sector.

Ms Butler said the Government remained committed to Tasmania Together and encouraged the broader community to fully participate in the 10 Year Review.
