Michael Hodgman has announced today that he will retire from politics at the next Tasmanian state election, drawing to a close a distinguished political career that spans five decades.
One of Australia’s longest serving current politicians, Michael has always brought enormous passion and zest to his advocacy for the interests of Tasmania.
He entered federal politics in December 1975 and went on to serve as the Minister for the Capital Territory and Minister Assisting in Industry and Commerce in the Fraser Government.
Michael re-entered state politics in 1992 and has served in a number of shadow portfolios up until the present day.
Michael will not recontest the state seat of Denison due to ill-health. Lucy and I wish Michael and his family all the very best for the future.
I thank Michael for a lifetime of service to the Liberal Party and the people of Tasmania.
A great Tasmanian and a great Australian, Michael Hodgman will be missed.
