Pulping the mill: A wrap

Posted on

Last Thursday 57 people of all ages and from all walks of life – including ‘garden guru’ Peter Cundall – were arrested outside Parliament House in Hobart. The protest was completely peaceful and many complimented us on our level of organisation. The action attracted HUGE and very positive media attention. It was all over national radio while it was happening, it was the lead story on all Tasmanian TV stations that night and all major Australian newspapers carried it the following day. ABC 7.30 report did a long follow up story on the Friday about our extreme bail conditions – many of us have been excluded from the entire Hobart waterfront until our court date in February! Of course we will be contesting this. I have attached the media release from after the action, a list of selected media links and some photos for you. Our action will send a very strong message to Sodra and other potential joint venture partners and financiers that this mill means trouble!

On the flip side, we are all now facing fines, legal fees and court costs. While some of us are willing and able to contribute a large proportion of our own expenses, there are others who are extremely passionate and committed to this cause but will really struggle to meet these costs. What is more, the threat of fines may prevent many who would otherwise be involved from doing so. To be effective, we need to be as inclusive as possible. You have very kindly offered financial support and a contribution to other’s arrests is a huge benefit for this campaign. If you have not already done so, please donate to our legal fund: “Pulp the Mill – legal fund” Bendigo Bank BSB 633 000 Ac# 138361738
