Health Minister Uses Privilege to Divide Instead of Heal

The Tasmanian Greens today reacted with disbelief to Health Minister Giddings tabling in Parliament an interim report from the Tasmanian Medical Council (TMC) into investigations of allegations about Dr Paul McGinity.

Greens Member for Bass, Kim Booth MP, said that he was appalled that the Minister had failed to heed the calls to accept responsibility for the 3,000 patients and visiting holidaymakers who have been left without their traditional doctor service as a direct result of the TMC suspending Dr McGinity.

“Three thousand people in North-East Tasmania have lost the doctor services they were dependent upon and, despite repeated calls both inside and outside Parliament for the Health Minister to step in and ensure continuity of treatment, Minister Giddings has instead used Parliamentary privilege to slander Doctor McGinity via the tabling of this report, without a single word from her about restoring services,” said Mr Booth.

“These patients are facing serious risks to their health and safety due to a lack of access to the doctor services they require, but the best our Health Minister can do is demonstrate a complete lack of integrity by slandering their Doctor.”

“I am horrified by the continued lack of concern shown by the Bartlett Government and sincerely hope that the people of North-East Tasmania realise that the only way to fix this problem is to get rid of Labor at the upcoming election,” said Mr Booth.
