Labor’s Tarkine incompetence

Posted on

Revelations that Labor doesn’t have the legislative authority to actually build their divisive Tarkine Loop Road – even if it does get Federal environmental approval – proves once again that Labor simply don’t know what they’re doing.

Even as late as two days ago Graeme Sturges was talking about getting a quick environmental approval in order to get work underway before the election, and disgraced backbencher Bryan Green has been politicking the road as a solution to the McCain closure announcement.

It says a lot about Labor that they first announced this road project nearly 18 months ago, but only after Parliament has risen before the election do they discover that they don’t actually have the legal power to build it.

This project is now in chaos. Graeme Sturges clearly has no idea what is going on and it is clear that the Government needs to go back to the drawing board and abandon this poorly thought out scheme.

The position of the State Opposition is clear: we oppose this divisive road, and will reallocate the $23 million set aside for it to more environmentally sensitive and job creating projects in the region.
