The Tasmanian Greens today welcomed the final passage of the Integrity Commission Bill, with the passing of the Legislative Council amendments, saying that now Tasmania is well on the way to having an independent investigative body which will help restore the public’s faith in the State’s democratic systems and institutions.
Greens Leader Nick McKim MP said that it is disappointing that the debate on this critical piece of legislation had been rushed, saying that it warranted detailed analysis and assessment, and predicted that further refining would be needed at a future date.
“For ten years the Greens and members of the public have advocated that Tasmania needs an independent investigative body, and today’s passage of the Integrity Commission Bill is an important milestone that finally delivers for the community,” Mr McKim said.
“However, it is unfortunate that Labor were slow to see the light on this matter, which means that this significant piece of legislation has been rushed, and the Greens predict that further amendments will eventuate once the Commission is established.”
