Can Gunns Use Directive No.2 to Force Their Pipeline Onto Unwilling Landowners?
The Tasmanian Greens today again called on Planning Minister David Llewellyn to rule out that the current Draft Planning Directive No.2, Underground and Minor Aboveground Infrastructure will allow Gunns Limited to build its pulp mill pipeline despite the objections of the owners of the land that the pipeline must cross.
Greens Pulp Mill spokesperson Kim Booth MP said Gunns’ inability to get landowners’ consent to build the pulp mill pipeline across their land has effectively killed off the project, but the Bartlett Government now appears to be amending planning requirements in order to resuscitate the mill.
“David Llewellyn must come clean and reveal whether this amendment is a Trojan Horse to sneak Gunns’ pipeline onto the properties of landowners who are utterly opposed to this polluting and poisonous pulp mill proposal,” said Mr Booth.
“When asked about this in Parliament today Mr Llewellyn failed to deny that this directive may legally allow Gunns to send its bulldozers onto landowners’ private property, to facilitate the building of the pulp mill pipeline.”
“Is the Bartlett Government riding roughshod over the rights of landowners in order to provide more support to the pulp mill proposal?”
“Planning Minister David Llewellyn must come clean with the Tasmanian people and reveal whether Gunns will be able to use Draft Planning Directive No.2 to force their pipeline onto private properties owned by unwilling landowners. Mr Llewellyn failed to deny this when asked in Parliament this morning, and he must now reveal the answer to this important question,” said Mr Booth.
