The Tasmanian Greens today welcomed the Bartlett Government’s preliminary response to the landmark report by Social Inclusion Commissioner, Professor David Adams, and commended its focus on food security, micro-financing and social enterprises to strengthen communities, but reminded the Premier that disadvantage and division run deep in Tasmania, and that a comprehensive strategy is needed.

Greens Health and Human Services spokesperson Cassy O’Connor MP said the $10 million in public funds to be invested in the establishment of a food security network, the introduction of no interest micro-finance loans and the funding of local enterprises that invest back into communities, are commendable steps forward.

“Professor Adams’ landmark report very clearly represented the people who are experiencing disadvantage and social exclusion in Tasmania. He set out ten strategies to transform the social settings and create a community that values – and works to harness – the capacity of all Tasmanians, regardless of age, gender, poor health or socio-economic situation, education, disability, race, sexuality, or distance from major centres,” said Ms O’Connor.

“The economic sun may have shone on Tasmania for a decade, but too many Tasmanians have felt none of its warmth.”

“It’s clear that after eleven years of Labor Government in Tasmania, the barriers to social inclusion remain for a significantly high percentage of Tasmanians who face spiralling costs of living, lack of access to public transport, services and affordable housing, as well as poor health outcomes when compared with the rest of the nation.”

“Full marks to Premier Bartlett for commissioning Professor Adams’ report and preparing a preliminary response that addresses some of its challenges. The test now is for his government to deliver a comprehensive response to the Social Inclusion Strategy for Tasmania that addresses disadvantage at its foundation, works to end divisions in our community and ensures a more just society where every individual feels valued and included.”

“The Greens stand ready to work cooperatively towards this goal,” Ms O’Connor said.
