Price rise welcome but the fight continues
Any increase in the price paid to dairy farmers is welcome and demonstrates to all stakeholders that no price is set in concrete. The combined efforts of campaigning parties has made a difference to date and the decision to raise the price shows that a better deal is always possible.
While the size of the price rise is clearly insufficient to cover the costs of production, the fact that the market has demonstrated a capacity to move is a positive first step. We now need to see that upward movement in price continue until, at a bare minimum, it reaches the price of production, from this point on the industry will finally be able to rebuild itself.
It was the State Liberals that helped start the public pressure on the milk companies in highlighting the plight of the states dairy farmers and we congratulate all groups and individuals that have contributed to bring about the initial upward movement in prices paid for this important commodity. We need to continue to fight for our dairy industry to make sure momentum is maintained and fair and reasonable price is finally delivered to our struggling dairy farmers.
