Police probe Gay home smoke-bomb

Posted on

It is understood that a smoke bomb was ignited on Mr Gay’s front doorstep just after midnight but he didn’t contact police, seeking to avoid publicity.
It is also the second weekend in a row that Mr Gay has had graffiti painted on his front fence.

Family sources said that Mr Gay and his wife were “extremely nervous about a radical anti-pulp mill element in the community”.

When contacted by The Examiner yesterday, Mr Gay confirmed the attack. He declined to comment further because he did not want to encourage such attacks.

It is understood that police found out about the smoke-bomb attack third-hand and visited Mr Gay’s home in East Launceston at 8.30am yesterday.

Forensic officers and police searched the entire property and took fingerprint samples.

They were also seen inspecting the letterbox.

The attacks coincide with a fiery community cabinet meeting at Beaconsfield last Sunday where 21 anti- pulp mill protesters were arrested.
