Economy
phill Parsons reports from the end of the Stupidocene 23OCT09
An occasional report covering the science that either the dolts in charge cannot understand or their all to powerful ‘friends’ refuse to allow them to, comments on how the politics of the climate crisis ate the old parties beliefs and other rantings.
Dr Mal Washer, Liberal, when commenting on a scientific briefing for Federal MP’s let the cat out of the bag when he described a light coming on for several members as they gained an understanding of the future impacts of the growing climate instability.
How long has this debate been going on now and still they fail to grasp what this key element for the environment means for society and its associated economy.
And then there are those who remain clueless like Tuckey, Member for the Dark Age and Senator Steve Fielding, a man from another planet where its cooling. Ask them in Rockhampton Steve.
More and more science. Here’s a partial explanation of why the warming is going faster than the models predicted.
Some enjoyed their tropical fish, others were dependent on eating them.
And for Senator Steve Fielding another NOAA speaks sans tablet.
It’s the second warmest September on record just behind 2005. Ocean surface temperature was an equal tie with the last five, yes Steve that figures 5, years. Some cooling eh ?.
Particle pollution has many side affects.
It’s another reason to go over to renewable energy systems.
Two articles demonstrate the power of propaganda.
One shows support for nuclear energy rising.
Another show concern about climate instability falling
Is it any wonder with the propaganda being blasted out by the industry lobbyists and swallowed whole by a compliant media, especially The Australian.
The Australian has taken a line against changing anything at all. It is difficult to believe that supposedly intelligent people, journalists not working at the Ex, can be so short sightedly stupid without some pressure applied from above.
Is Murdoch’s bet each way carbon neutral media empire simply a screen so he has entry to the halls of power, where some understand the implications of runaway climate instability and shun those who are outspokenlt in denial?.
Whilst we are facing an influx of refugees escaping what is commonly understood as war, Afghanis, Sri Lankans, Iraqis, the flows of those trying to escape the effects of climate instability will make the current refugee flows pale into insignificance.
Australia will never be ready for floods of refugees and there will be reaction from a community faced with such a problem and they may blame those who failed to act to limit climate instability.
China’s reported position change will be good news if it is true. However, they should realize that if they support the right treaty conditions the change to renewables will assist their people both environmentally and in developing an economy which they can continue to live with.
The wealth transfer they seek will come from the investment in new energy sources the manufacture of which will locate in China and India because they are huge markets in and of themselves.
Straw burners should note that mulch conserves water as we move to a world where population increase and climate instability exacerbate the inability to properly feed the globe’s population.
Look at the attached map to see the potential for the food bowl without any additional water from the Bartlett irrigation idea that as yet has no costing or implementation plan.
Will it go off the agenda now the opium industry is exploring other jurisdiction for growing their crops.
And writing of food check out the rice story
Research show rice yield falls at higher atmospheric CO2 level so the question is do the hungry take to the boats, how many and when.
Leaving agriculture out of the penalties of an ETS and encouraging them to take up carbon positive practices has been my position for some little time. Here is supporting argument
Here
Taking the landcare approach to changing farmers’ practices will see better adoption than a regulatory scheme. My exception is intensive animal husbandry, where manures should be processed to extract the energy before being reused as fertilizer.
The Federal Government offered low interest loans to home owners to encourage a conversion to alternative energy systems. Overwhelmed with reponses the government has been painfully slow to approve very few loans.
If you wished to encourage such a change of direction for the economy then feed in tariffs would rmove all the green Rudd tape crap and allow the capacity of the ecomy to produce the necessaries to dictate the change.
An economic stimulus that goes on and on, giving the households that change more and more spending power as their fuel bills decline.
Federal Liberals oppose the Rudd Government ETS and support for the Federal Liberals falls to equal record low since Howard’s defeat.

Is there a message here for the opponents of Turnbull here?.
The Nationals are lining up, as I predicted, to be the party of the Dark Age, the One Nation for climate crisis deniers but don’t worry, the ice melt is not as fast as previously thought.
Of course this is being measured when the globes systems are reacting to the levels of GHG from 30 years ago, the time lag before the GHG released actually contributes to heating. We will cross the 350ppm threshold and enter into the impacts of dangerous heating in 10 years.
No I didn’t mistype, the danger level has been reviewed by James Hansen and others. The 450ppm target that may be adopted in Copenhagen guarantees danger.
Even if we manage to turn GHG growth back and stopping ice melt in a hotter world will not occur for a millennium.
And from the forests a ‘good’ news story about biodiversity;
And one less so about forest productivity migrating uphill.
The end of the Stupidocene could go either way.
Comments on some of the impacts of a changed Arctic climate can be found above
Old becomes new here again, the Arctic to be ice free, sea levels to rise and weather to change as a result. The new might be in the time frame, its 11 years away even if a deal in Copenhagen is struck.
That becomes more likely as funds for developing nations greening up and developing are made available by the Annex 1 countries, whose development has caused the climate crisis.
Less than 11 weeks and you will know.
Of course, if the measure of success in stemming the rate of biodiversity loss is anything to go by then the success of an agreement to change the basics of fuelling and growing economies is set for a bumpy if not failed path.
The Federal governments’ solar schools program has funded 1800 schools and may, if the applications in hand are successful, reach out to 25% of Australian schools. However for this year the program is suspended, it has run out of dough until the next budget.
Garrett has not made a public announcement even though a positive spin could be found.
If Education Minister Gillard can spend billions of buildings why cannot the conversion of schools to low carbon energy sources be funded within that program instead of new buildings that may not be essential for each school.
Schools were limited in their choices so we will not know how many would have opted for a greening up.
Further embarrassment for the cobbled together failures of the Rudd government in not seriously addressing the climate crisis and limiting the instability that those who are going to school today will have to accept as the norm for the rest of their lives.
Earthships get a review below as architects consider how homes of the future will look, what they will be built of and how they will operate.
Its time to change the building regulations to ensure houses are orientated for best solar efficiency, the materials used minimize energy and resource consumption and maximize regional materials and living in them minimizes dependence on external resources to support them day to day.
