It is time to consider US style anti-trust laws
The farm gate milk price crisis is the latest example of the need to control big national companies. As a local councillor I’ve seen the way the ‘big boys’ use market dominance and lobbyists to look after themselves, while shopkeepers, contractors, tradespeople and suppliers do a daily battle for market share and have neither the time nor the money to lobby government for favours.
to strengthen laws to prevent monopolistic (or duopolistic) market dominance, the horizontal integration of more and more services under one brand and the vertical integration where one company controls every stage from the farm gate, forest or mine to retail sale of the product.
Small business, suppliers and contractors deserve a fair go, after all they supply most of the jobs and are the engine room of the economy.
